Roland Terry 4-BR in North Beach lists for $895K

One of Seattle’s modern masters is behind the design for this North Seattle home

From the 1940s to the 1990s, architect Roland Terry helped define the Pacific Northwest approach to modern architecture. That’s on display with this 4-BR home in North Seattle’s North Beach neighborhood, which recently listed for $895K.

This place was built in 1942 if you can believe it. While it certainly doesn’t look modern-modern, the sensibility just seems so futuristic to that time period, at least from the exterior. Inside, a more classic modern look thanks to big windows, wood floors, and warm fireplaces.

No surprise that Terry was about open living spaces. The living area and dining area co-mingle while the outdoors is just an open door away. A series of built-ins and cabinetry give the space some structure and help it to stand out at bit from the masses. The kitchen space is a bit of a throwback in design but certainly upgraded in terms of appliances and features.

Upstairs the master bedroom is spacious and the master bath has clearly gotten an upgrade. Other bedrooms and even the bathrooms have their own distinct personalities.

Out back, an understated deck gives way to a green backyard hemmed in by hedges and trees. Like Terry’s designs, there’s a touch of artistry at play but ultimately it’s about mixing with the surrounding nature to form an enjoyable living space.
